When I tell you I have been chasing perfectly wavy, wash-and-wear hair my whole life, I'm not exaggerating. Nothing got me even close until I got a razor cut and I will never go back to regular haircuts again.
In my many futile attempts to achieve this with my head of copious, fine, almost-but-not-quite-stick-straight hair, I had no fewer than three perms as a kid/teenager. One I regretted so quickly I chemically straightened it the next day (my mom was a beauty rep and went to beauty school, she knew what she was doing and it was, after all, the 80s). I always either curled it or straightened it with hot tools. Now, with a little product, I basically air dry my hair and it has the wavy, flippy style I always thought was out of reach. Take a mosey through Jayne Matthews insta (the queen of razor cuts) and see how great they look on pretty much anyone!
It is expensive. You might balk at the cost like I did. I am not a big "beauty" person but it is 10000% worth it in my opinion because you can literally go 6-12 months between cuts (I go 6 months right now because I have so. much. damn. hair. and I need a lot of weight taken out, with a bang trim every 4ish months). It will grow out beautifully with none of that “man I really need a haircut” awkwardness.
You can purchase Jayne's DIY classes and try it to cut your own - I did that to try to save money, and it totally works for some people, but I learned I have just too much hair and too many cowlicks to be able to get what I wanted as an amateur. My stylist at Edo, one of Jayne's proteges, told me they get a lot of folks that have attempted to DIY and have come in hoping Edo's stylists can salvage their DIY work. I'd recommend if you want to go the DIY route, get it done professionally first and then maintain it yourself.
I can also wholeheartedly recommend Edo Salon (I was going to the Oakland location but they have one is SF too) & my stylist Tiffany Faircloth, who recently has struck out on her own - you can book with her at her new studio, Suite 108, through her insta @cest_tiffany.
